The "Make a Metroid" contest at the MDb is in it's final weeks. The top three winners will win glorious prizes, not some cheap knock offs, but real Metroid merchandise, like games, shirts, METROID METAL, ECT! Why have you not submitted a Metroid yet. Samus needs your help!

(as usual, blah blah sorry if it's a repost I have tried to check blah blah)
My latest hobby is going through the Sesame Street channel on YouTube and watching all the celebrity guest videos. It's fun for all the family, and you can try it yourself at home, but my personal highlights include:
Jack Black talking about *awesome* octagons (which people have probably seen before, but I had not).
Jon Stewart practising.
Brian Williams having a nervous breakdown.
And my favourite I have attempted to embed, because I think it is awesome and embedding things excites me:

On November 19, 2009 Al Cisneros confirmed in an interview with The Obelisk that SLEEP will be reuniting in the fall of 2010 for some US dates.
Can I just say, I cannot wait for Christmas!! The presents, the food, the whole celebrating the birth of our lord and savio--... Oh right, I'm not Christian, so fuck that last little bit, there. Not having any religious ties to this coming holiday season, might I say how excited I am to exploit the day as much as possible for what it really is? While I celebrate, I'll likely be listening to this:

Yesh. iz meddel.

Dear Sabaton,
Please tour the US at some point in 2010! When you do, be sure to stop by Boston. Preferably the Middle East or the House Of Blues! You guys kick so much ass I really want to see you play live! If you could play Panzerkampf, that would be amazing (however if you don't, no hard feelings)!
Sincerely,
Wren

"Well, it has been a very exhausting month - after all the neverending tests in Los Angeles, we flew to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, and as soon as we arrived, we got a call from the MD Anderson Hospital that they had an appointment for us with the doctor we originally wanted, so we then flew to Houston to the clinic, and of course MORE tests, but Ronnie finished receiving his first chemo treatment on Wednesday, and all is going very well.
I would like to thank Tony Martell from the T.J. Martell Foundation, Dr. Stuart Aaronson from Mount Sinai, Lindsay Brown and Mike Carden from Eagle Records, and our very own Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, for all your help in getting us into MD Anderson, and also our friends Geezer and Gloria Butler, who flew to Houston to be with Ronnie while he had his chemo.
Ronnie and I are totally overwhelmed by the amount of well wishes that we have received from friends and fans - we are reading them all. Some make us laugh, some make us cry, but all of them are so filled with love that it gives us so much support and makes Ronnie even more determined to fight this battle and win. Thank you all for the positive energy and prayers."
In the meantime, Heaven And Hell are confirmed to play the Sonisphere festivals in Sweden, Finland and Czech Republic, as well as the Nova Rock festival in Austria.

So.
Metroid 5 as I would like to see it:
It would be a 2.5-D (2D gameplay, 3D graphics) sidescroller on the DS,
Taking place after Metroid Fusion (as it would have to, since Fusion is Metroid 4).
The main antagonist is the Federation, and the side antagonist is Sylux. The Federation, Samus, and Sylux are all against each other.
The final boss is some kind of genetically-altered version of the Queen Metroid from Metroid 2, which of course would be genetically altered by the federation, since they were revealed to be experimenting with genetically engineering Metroids. Despite the fact that the last Metroids were supposedly destroyed at the end of Metroid 4. Plot device!
Samus would obviously still have the fusion suit and her newest ship. Might be a good opportunity to create new alterations for the suit.
I'd also be super-happy if it was named Metroid Dread.
Will any of this happen?
DEFINITELY NOT

So there's this meme going around my circles, thought it appropriate to share here. X-posted to my personal LJ.
If I was picking songs at my funeral right now, I suspect the crowd would be running out of the funeral home in abject terror at this zombie metalhead teddybear making requests of a horrified DJ.
Seriously, though, I couldn't give a shit, I'll be too dead to care. But what the hell, I'll play along.
Eaten Back To Life by Cannibal Corpse. You can't get rid of me that easily. Maybe Dead By Dawn by Deicide
Here are a few that I like to play while I am alive:
Lust For Life by Gamma Ray.
Eye Of The Tiger by Survivor
Eagle Fly Free by Helloween
Long Since Dark by Sanctuary
I see a pattern...

Grovelling apologies to for not finalising her application a lot earlier. In my defence, I was out having a life for three days, but I also realise I could have done it while I was in Whitby and was making my last post, and clean forgot. Bah. Worry ye not, now, for you have the run of the community. Now show us what you've got!
So, at this point, we are back up to 100 members. Not all of them active, mind. Some have had to have more than one voted-on application to be here. There are also 82 former members, some originally carried over from t'old community that we don't talk about any more. And in all the four years this community has been here, there have only been 23 rejected applications. Two of those were from the same person, and three later tried again and succeeded. And of the 19 remaining failures, four happened in the first couple of months, leaving an average of approximately one failure every three months. That's really not a bad average.
Also, this morning, I received a bar of chocolate in the post from
hakucho_cygnus. This was not a retrospective bribe for MOTM, but if anyone wants to send me anything else in the post, whether it be chocolate, beer, reindeer jerky, Clutch bootlegs or cuddly Abbath toys, I might just consider bumping you up the queue for January. Heh.

Almost a fortnight ago, I did another stint behind the decks at Nottingham Trent University’s Assault rock, metal and alternative night. This time, instead of being in the main room, I was in the back room, helping out with the metal.
Assault back room setlist, Friday 20th November 2009, 9.30pm–2am
As ever, I’d be interested to hear what you guys think.

I recently received several FFDP promo shirts and 7" singles from Dante Bonutto at Spinefarm UK for use in competitions on my show.
I am intending to auction one of these shirts and singles, with the proceeds to go to Mike's memorial fund.
I hope you will be able to support me in this effort. I will be publishing the details for making bids on my blog at http://www.wyrdwaysrs.com and in the next Wyrd Ways Rock Show, which will be posted to the same website this coming Sunday. The same show will also appear on PureRockRadio.net on the following Friday at 10pm GMT. I would appreciate it if you were able to post details on your websites and MySpace sites.
Thanks for your time.

Because I enjoy arbitrary lists: Best of the 1990's in metal. I am actually going to limit it to 5 per year this time, otherwise this list would get out of control.
( Right here, son. )
Though there are some odd ones out, that list surprised me more than I thought. There's kind of a coherent narrative throughout the decade.. Death metal, then black metal, and then things apparently went all kind of haywire and random.
Does anyone think the 00's told a "story" in metal? My list seemed rather haphazard, even when organized by year. Thoughts?

Following in
simonb3's digitized, text-based version of footsteps, I have concocted my own special "list" of favorite groups of metal anthems. It is a strong brew of many different flavors, so drink it deeply, and savor each swig, FOR IT MAY BE YOUR LAST.

These two are so awesome to see live, so don't miss them if you get a chance!
What, you thought not following my journal would mean that you don't get to hear my opinions did you? Nonsense! Here are the best fifty metal albums released in the last ten years - if you think something else should be included it probably wasn't quite this good, was good but not metal, or was shit (like your taste :smug:) but please suggest away anyway.
Also sometime later this month I'm going to do a top 100 albums of the last decade across all genres but I probably won't post it here.
( read on, intrepid ones )

Though I would certainly have no trouble producing a best of the 70's, 80's or 90's list, the 00's was the first decade where I experienced most of the material as it was new, more or less untainted by fanboy nostalgia. So I'll attempt to pick just a couple for each year of the decade, as opposed to some other lists I've seen that catalog 100 albums or more. Everyone else should share theirs, or tell me how wrong my list is.
( Epic List. It got a bit more bloated than intended. )

A small piece of celebrity gossip, mainly for
tinaviel: At the Swallow the Sun/Insomnium/Omnium Gatherum gig last night (it was awesome, by the way; more on that later, most likely), I bumped into a chap I used to work with called Rod, who just happens to be good friends with everybody’s favourite Nottingham-based mighty metal pixie Martin Walkyier (Sabbat, Skyclad, and The Clan Destined, in case anyone doesn’t already know). Apparently, Martin “would have been here tonight, but he’s got really bad toothache.”
Also, there’s going to be a new The Clan Destined release in 2010. Rod says that it’s “Much, much heavier… more traditional than In The Big Ending.”

Tribe are playing at Trillian's in Newcastle on Thursday 10th of December with a band by the name of Dryll. That band happens to feature former Venom members Mantas and Antton (brother of Chronos). Even better, it's FREE to get in!
Anyone in range of Newcastle next Thursday, make sure you get yourself over there. It should be a good night.
While I'm here, I'd also recommend you check out Leeds/London band, The Glitterati. First album was produced by the legendary Mike Clink (who the band have maintained contact with) and the second will be out on Demolition Records in the next couple of months, produced by Matt Hyde (Monster Magnet's producer). They'll be playing a hometown gig at Joseph's Well in Leeds (or The Well as it has been rebranded recently... don't get me started on "rebranding") in February. Saw them supporting WASP on Monday, and if they'd not really pulled it out, The Glitterati would have blown them off the stage.
Hopefully, if the technology works out, I'll be playing an interview with them pretty soon.

Some of you may know this already, some of you won't, but if you're on our side of the pond, consider showing up to raise some cash for three kids who have had to be told their dad isn't ever going to come home from Sweden.
The dates are:
7th December - Leeds Rio's
8th December - Camden Underworld
On show will be Seregon (who really, really want to be Sepultura circa the early 90s), Mutant (who describe themselves as the best thrash band in the UK), and Gama Bomb (who are the best thrash band in the UK if consider metal-archives' statement that they're based in Newry is true, or they're the best thrash band in Ireland if you don't). The three surviving members of Evile will presumably be there as well, somewhere in the crowd.
I'll be at Leeds, but let's have a show of hands for both so we all know who's going.

Since Jim accurately pointed out, a few entries back, that I haven't been as consistently active as I once was in here, I have decided to redo my old application. Partially because I think that changes have taken place since I last rewrote it that would now render the old one inaccurate, and also so newer members of the community can 'get to know me better', etc.

Said the Aussie:
ALSO the member who uploads the album with the most new listeners by the end of the month will be named Metalhead of the Month for December! Jim, were you going to do one for November?
Yes, I am. Take a look on the front page and you'll see:
An award that is given according to participation, and let's face it, to popularity.
I took a look through all the posts for November. There were some good contributions, but it's not been a month where any one particular member has stood out above all others (like there was when
ominusbludvomit won; we were all in unanimous agreement on that one). So, I thought this time I'd award it for participation. Several other communities do this with a points system, and I have noted who made how many posts and who made how many comments during November. You want to know who made the most comments this month? Actually, it was
castratikron, most of which were on her application. But having seen that there are roughly ten times as many comments as there are posts, I decided to make one post worth five comments. Looking at the overall scores, then, in second place I see it is me. But, as I'm a mod, and I make mod posts, I will step aside from the final table - as will the four others. Also, I can't count
castratikron or
ghost0reveries this time, as they've become members during this month and have (necessarily) commented a lot on their applications. Also, I have to leave out
boblovesmusic and
thunarr, as they're members of the Hall of Fame, and that's the division above this award.
In fifth place:
aiden_macleod: 44
In fourth place:
pncxcll: 46

boblovesmusic: 64)

iron_irony is accepted (which won't be long now) we will have 99 members, and 37 scored zero points for November. No posts, no comments. Some of those I can't ever remember a single contribution from other than the application. I may get an itchy clear-the-community trigger finger at some stage...
